About Me

Smiling, dancing, everything is free! All you need is positivity!

This quote has been my approach both to life and to teaching. I am a Latin teacher in suburban Atlanta. I have taught Latin at the elementary, middle school, high school, and college levels at four different institutions in two states. I currently teach at Parkview High School in Lilburn in a completely Comprehensible Input (CI) Latin program. This blog is the space where I share my teaching practices and thoughts on issues and experiences related to pedagogy, the classics, and more. I will post about my travels as well.

Why Latin?

I first became fascinated with the ancient world in first grade when I learned about ancient Egypt, so my mom and I would see visiting exhibitions on ancient Egypt when they came to museums in town. When I was thirteen, we saw the exhibit Cleopatra: From History to Myth and from there I was hooked - I wanted to learn as much as I could about the ancient and medieval past. I knew that my goal would not be fulfilled unless I could read the very words of the Greeks and Romans, so as a freshman in college (my high school did not offer classical languages), I started taking Ancient Greek (yep, I'm one of those weirdos who started with Greek!). The following year I started Latin and haven't looked back since! I chose to teach Latin in particular because I love the interdisciplinary nature of language teaching; in my classroom I cover history, mythology, linguistics, art history, philosophy, and more!

Spice up your Latin?

The name of my blog combines two of my favorites: Latin (of course) and the Spice Girls. For the tragically uninitiated, the title comes from their song "Spice Up Your Life." The song is an anthem of positivity and global unity, both of which I encourage in my classroom.

To answer your question, my favorite is Geri (Ginger Spice).
